According to two different studies conducted, those people who ate fish at least once a week were less likely to develop macular degeneration. One study indicated that the risk was reduced by approximately 42% while the other study indicated a reduction in risk of approximately 44%. This reduction in risk was for early stage macular degeneration. The reduction in risk for late stage macular degeneration was approximately 56%.

People who ate fish three times or more in a week were shown to have a 75% reduction in the risk of late stage macular degeneration.

One study indicated that by reducing the dietary fats associated with things such as beef, pork and lamb, the risk of developing macular degeneration was further reduced. The studies clearly indicated that the benefits provided in the omega-3 fatty acids were offset by high consumption of omega-6 fatty acides typically foundin these meats. The secret wasn't to cut out all the fats from ones diet, but to limit the intake of the "bad" fats, and increase the intake of omega-3.

Flaxseed, tofu and walnuts have also been shown to provide a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Many health food stores also provide omega-3 supplements that can be used to enrich the dietary intake.
